🎶 AI Song Contest returns championing human-AI co-creation (more)

The AI Song Contest is back for 2025, hosted in Amsterdam and it couldn’t be more timely. In a world where headlines about AI in music often stir fear around copyrights or deepfakes, this contest offers a hopeful counter-narrative: AI as a collaborator, not a replacement.

Since its launch in 2020, the contest has become a global stage for musicians and AI builders to team up and create original music. It's not about just generating AI tracks but more so about using AI as a creative tool to inspire, accelerate, and expand what's possible in songwriting.

From melody generation to lyric suggestions and vocal enhancements, teams are experimenting with how AI can unlock new directions in sound while keeping the human at the heart of the process. This year’s edition includes workshops, public voting, and a final awards show in November. It’s one of the clearest examples yet that music made with AI not by AI is where the most exciting innovation is happening.

🚫 Anthropic wins early round in AI copyright battle (more)

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot has scored an early win in its legal fight with major music publishers. A California judge denied a request from Universal and others to block Claude from generating song lyrics, saying the injunction was too broad and lacked urgent cause.

The lawsuit claims Anthropic used copyrighted lyrics to train Claude, raising deep questions about how generative AI models source and replicate creative works. Anthropic has already agreed to install filters, but this case is shaping up to be a key precedent in defining how AI and copyright coexist moving forward.

💻️ China’s Kunlun Tech unveils music AI model to rival Suno (more)

Kunlun Tech, valued at $6B, has debuted "Mureka O1" a new AI model it calls the world’s first “music reasoning” system. Designed to surpass tools like Suno, Mureka is built for richer vocal textures, advanced mixing, and stylistic versatility across genres like pop, R&B, and jazz.

What sets it apart? A "Music Reference Function" lets users upload tracks or YouTube links as inspiration, and a vocal feature allows creators to customize singing voices.

👧 China debuts first fully AI-generated girl group (more)

In a bold experiment at the intersection of pop culture and AI, China has just introduced a fully AI-generated girl group complete with virtual members, a debut single, and an animated music video. The project, created by the Douyin-backed studio Ranmai Technology, aims to test whether AI idols can resonate with real audiences.

Everything from the vocals to choreography was AI-generated, raising fresh questions about authenticity, fandom, and the role of human expression in pop music.
