The Baseline AI Music - Edition #5
In depth with Suno ́s founder - your weekly sub 3min vibe

We are back this week with an exciting development. Founder of Suno appeared on 20VC discussing all things AI, music and their recent lawsuits! I´ll cover that and more..

🎶 Unpicking Mikey Shulman´s recent episode on AI & Music (Listen)
"Scale is not the answer to all the problems in music. Unlike text, music is totally subjective, and models must have good taste, not just size."
Suno prioritizes creating meaningful and interactive musical experiences, aiming to make music creation as engaging as video games (using Fortnite as a dubious example). Unlike traditional models focused on passive consumption, Suno’s AI tools empower users to become active participants in the music-making process. Shulman challenges the notion that scaling large models alone will revolutionize music, stressing that subjective creativity requires tailored and smaller models aligned with human taste.
"The music business has such a fixed-pie mentality. If we were focused on growing the pie instead of fighting over it, everyone would benefit.
Alluding to the pending RIAA lawsuit, Shulman acknowledges the presence of copyrighted works in Suno’s training data, a standard practice across AI industries. He expresses frustration over the litigious nature of the music industry, noting that collaborative approaches could yield greater innovation and growth. Suno believes the future of music lies in collaboration between AI companies and traditional players, rather than adversarial dynamics that hinder progress. He seeks constructive dialogue to build a larger, more vibrant music ecosystem.
"The future of music should be about a lot more people making music, spending more time on it, and creating meaningful experiences."
Looking ahead, Suno envisions a music industry with broader participation, innovative economic models, and a shift toward more interactive and personalized experiences. He aims to democratize music creation while enabling deeper connection between artists, creators, and audiences.
"It’s not really enjoyable to make music now.”
Ok, the controversial one.
I believe his statement comes from an accessibility perspective. Creating music requires significant skill development (mastery of an instrument), music theory, and in modern times, production software. The real question is, what % of people abandon projects midway due to the steep learning curve (of professional quality tracks).
That´s why I think he oversimplifies the issue. For many, the creative process itself is deeply fulfilling. Music-making provides a sense of flow and emotional release, creating a sense of achievement and self-expression. While sure, there are challenges, particularly for beginners, he underestimates the achievement that many pursue.

💡 Exciting Technology
AI Radio Station (more)
Rapper Lupe Fiasco is collaborating with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to launch 'Endless LUP,' a fully AI-powered FM radio station. The station will generate and broadcast AI-created songs modelled after Fiasco's unique rapping style, ensuring each track is played only once, creating a continuous stream of exclusive content. Access to 'Endless LUP' will be limited to specific times and locations, requiring listeners to use an actual FM radio to tune in. This is an exciting step in the consumerisation of AI in the creative sectors.
New text to music platform (more)
Brev.ai is an innovative, AI-powered platform that transforms text into music swiftly and effortlessly. Designed for creatives, it enables users to generate high-quality songs and instrumentals by simply inputting text, which the AI interprets to produce unique musical compositions. The platform is entirely online, free to use, and requires no advanced technical knowledge, making it accessible to both seasoned creators and beginners.
